Welcome to Wooden Treasures by George
Having been in the lumber business for over thirty years in one capacity or another gave me the opportunity to collect a wide array of those special pieces of wood that your average woodworker could only dream about. I use kiln dried and green native North American woods such as maple, oak, elm, walnut, pine etc. As well as exotic woods - sapele, bubinga, yellow and purple heart, and many more from South America and Africa. Even after all my years of woodturning special gifts for friends and family, I have not even scratched the surface of my “stash”. Every time I start digging I find another gem in the rough, sometimes they even appear out of the firewood pile. Whether it is local bird’s eye maple or an exotic like bubinga, I know there is something very special inside just waiting to be released. I have seen myself pick up the same piece of wood ten or twelve times before I can envision just what it wants to be.
If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind wooden treasure, which will never be duplicated, you have come to the right place. I strive to make my hand-crafted woodturnings speak to and for the people who buy them; when you need to let someone know just how much you care, my work can speak volumes. I like to think of my creations as “presentation pieces” - unique pieces of wooden art. We are inundated with computer manufactured décor items today that have no heart and it shows. I take great pride in what I do and hand sign every piece that allows me space. I try to use as much imagination as I can when creating a piece and have been pleasantly surprised at the varied uses people put them to.
I create solid wood bowls, segmented bowls - Segmented bowls are made many individual pieces glued up to form a larger turning., vases and vessels, pens and a variety of small pieces. I also love to experiment with new ideas - you will see many of these under the special pieces section.
I use no stains at all, only hand rubbed oil finishes with
numerous coats of wax, which highlights the natural beauty of the wood. One statement I find myself using over and over again when talking about wood is “Wood is a living breathing thing. It continues to take on and give off moisture for ever.” I recommend that to keep your “Wooden Treasure” healthy and happy you need to apply a liberal coat of a good paste wax, such as MinWax or a carnauba wax at least 2 to three times a year. Care instructions are included with each piece.
